Chagos Archipelago

The first question will come to your mind is what is the Chagos Archipelago.
Let's simplify this, Archipelago word stands for a group of Islands or a chain of Islands.

So the Chagos Archipelago is a group of seven atolls comprising more than 60 Islands in the Indian Ocean about 500 kilometers south of the Maldives.

The Chagos Archipelago had been part of Mauritius since the 18th century.
Before Mauritian independence in 1965, The United Kingdom split the Archipelago from the territory of Mauritius.

Why the United Kingdom did this, to form the British Territory in the Indian Ocean.
And also UK permitted  USA to use Diego Gracia (an Island)  for their defense purposes.

These 50 years of the lease completed in 2016.
What should the United Kingdom do after completing the 50 years?
The United Kingdom should give the land back to Mauritius.

But still today the United Kingdom is having the Archipelago on an extended lease.
And Mauritius is demanding their ancient land back.

Why UK and USA not willing to leave the Chagos Archipelago, especially Diego Garcia.
Because of USA has an entire military base in Diego Garcia.

Mauritius wanted to take this issue to the International Court of Justice, for that Mauritius had to
get the majority votes in the United Nations general assembly.

And in June 2017, the UNGC voted in the favor of Mauritius.

India also supported Mauritius' claim over disputed Chagos Island under United Kingdom control.

This Chagos Archipelago dispute issue is currently under the International Court of Justice.
